Streetcar service is extended to Kenmore Square.

1886

Operated by the West End Railway Company, the horse-drawn line runs from downtown Boston along Beacon Street. It is extended to Coolidge Corner in Brookline in 1887, and along Washington Street to Oak Square in Brighton in 1889. The company was founded by Henry Whitney and incorporated on January 22, 1887, because none of the existing transit companies were interested in providing service along Beacon Street, where Whitney had bought up much of the property for development. It is greatly expanded in 1887,* and it introduces electric streetcar service to Boston in 1889.*
